tutorial: faux zinc the EASY way

dudes... thanks for the generous accolades but...um... it's awkward to read compliments for an idea sprouted from laziness.  makes my elbows itch.

but annie did call and we're working on a way to turn this faux-zinc finish into the real stuff.

in my dreams!  tee-hee-hee-heeeee.

as i said in the reveal post, this is easy peasy lemon squeezy... 'cuz i actually read annie's book:

my goddess of annie sloan chalk paint, stockest patty seaman advised me to shell out the 20 big ones for this and i'm glad i did.   annie writes about adding paint to the clear wax to feather in color, cover up spastic amy error and add dimension.  (not exactly those words.)

anywhoopla, there were a few questions about the process so i'm gonna review this one... more... time.

noooo, put that pencil down!  that's so 2010;  just "pin it", girl!

so... if you recall,  i started with 2 coats of annie sloan chalk paint in "graphite", sanded it with 200 grit sand paper and topped it off with one coat of clear wax.

with me so far?

you might want to sit down 'cuz this tutorial is earth-shaking in it's complexity.  grab hold of somethin', too!

Looks great!!! Its always nice when you have finishes that look super expensive and complicated, but are actually really easy to accomplish. I'm definitely a fan of this faux finish.

I am for-evah in your debt. Me thinks I shall invite Annie to my Birthday Party. The big 40 deserves a little hoopla, no?

And, I shall pin this with great ferver... I never wrote anything down anyway, so this is a big improvement.

I have been afraid to ask anyone till now....how do you clean the brush?

THE BRUSH!! yes, the brush is worth the 30-something bucks or so. i LOVE it and am considering other brushes annie is now selling for painting.

simple clean up... soap and water! if you forget to wash it out at night (i don't do it every night), just rub it back and forth on a hard surface and it will soft up again. also, you need to clean it if you move from waxing a colored piece to another colored piece b/c the paint does hide in the bristles and will transfer to other pieces.

(no, i was not given a free brush!)

Oh my goodness...so happy I clicked on the link from Cassie's blog! After perusing through your blog, I found out that you are literally going to be my neighbor! I'm down the road in the estate part of Tuscany! We just moved here from WA state last summer and my mom, who also paints furniture is moving next month and possibly building in portofino. Small world! We'll have to meet up sometime!

Btw, so trying this zinc technique...I have a can of graphite that's been calling my name for a while. Too bad Michael's is soooo far away for that silver paint.

Hi there Amy!

I "found" you today through Shari from Turnstyle Vogue. She was remarking on your similar styles and since I love her stuff I had to come check out yours! Well, she didn't lead me astray!! You have an awesome talent and I am now happily following your blog as well. I wish either one of you would be willing to move to NY so I could actually BUY some of this gorgeousness, but for now I will just have to drool on my screen and swoon!!

Have a great 4th!
