that's me pondering our new kitchen... and bathrooms... and bedrooms. yes, my posture's askew due to bearing the burden of decision-making...
and the fear of making a mistake...of regret.
that icky feeling hit me shortly after moving into our nj new construction 2002. i selected traditional maple cabinets in a natural finish, black granite counters and a natural oak floor. in no time orangeness oozed from the wood finishes, blinding me with their monotony. big regrets there.
we changed course when macguyver renovated our dallas kitchen in 2009 and went with off-white painted cabinets with a glazed finish in a traditional style.
so, now what? though i love the dallas kitchen, i'm ready for something different now... MOD, CLEAN, WHITE, and SIMPLE come to mind.
here is an early layout of our new NC kitchen/dining/living area.
of course, i've been the "mad pinner" in search of inspiration.
nice, eh? slightly sterile, though, i love the contrast of warm wood with cool whiteness.
delicious, don't you think? a bit too traditional in the details, but, again, warm wood and cool whiteness tickle me happy.
so, here are
despite the awesomeness of that fancy-dancy olioboard i created ALL BY MY NON-TECHY SELF in only 17 hours, the hardwood floor finish is still being debated, the granite color on the board is not accurate since it's a greeny-bluish-gray in person and the subway tile backsplash (up to the ceiling, of course!!) is also not firm.
what are your thoughts on white subway...has it run its course? it's reasonably priced and won't fight the granite/walnut top counters and busy up my little head.
but then i think about this gorgeous kitchen redo by kelly at eclectically vintage near my old nj stompin' grounds:
do you see that AHHH-mazing mosaic herringbone backsplash in marble?
i could just eat it up...but it's not as reasonable as the subway.
i hate reasonable.
kelly? anyone? i'm drowning in decisions... care to toss me a rope?

Oooo...ooo.ooo... mix them! White subway with a line of herringbone or something somwhere... Oh, I'm so envious!!! Now, I LOVE color...but I'm freaky over white kitchens! It's going to be fabulous, girl!!! And when you are done, I'm going to roam the roads and find you to see it in person...don't be scared.
I love glass subway tiles! I'm a big fan of the 1x2's & 1x4's. I was looking at pics of them running vertically and wished I could do that in my kitchen.
White subway tile will always be a classic IMO. Gwen had a great idea to add in a line of herringbone for interest. I had white subway tile in my last house thirteen years ago and I think if I were to build again- I'd still use it. I have tumbled marble and stone now with specialty tiles for accents. It looks very european old world, but I really miss the fresh clean lines of the white subway tile. It's timeless.
But as always...go with what you love and don't let anyone sway your choices. You are the one with the vision for your home. So go Amy-fy that house- your way.
I'm coming, too. I'll bring the tequila and the salsa.
I did subway and I never get tired of it, however the one thing that I'm going to try in the beach house is white subway tile+darker grout. So that I can actually SEE the shape of the tile. When I did subway at my house and used white grout it kinda disappeared...
and I like the antiqueness of the darker grout.
Ever been to Biltmore? Touring those underground kitchens and the indoor pool covered in tile really drove me toward that more antique look.
i love he glass subway tiles! i am not really good at this stuff though as i get overwhelmed because I.LOVE. IT. ALL.
Hi, Amy,
Just adding my two cents... As a kitchen designer, I wonder if you would not rather move the wall ovens over near the pantry then put the refrigerator next to that, banking all the tall cabinets together and have the rest of the counter space open to the family room. It would be good for serving, buffet, coffee bar, etc. I think the little bit of countertop you will be left with between the refrigerator and the wall ovens will be kinda tight and hard to really use. Just a thought. Also, will you have a microwave? My clients are loving the drawer style microwaves that are mounted under the counter. Might work well for you since wall space is at a premium here. Well, you asked...xoxo. Erin
I'm in agreement that white subway tile is timeless. And the fact that it's affordable...double score!
I say go with wallpaper with fruit on it.
Umm.. yeah.. not easy decisions. However I think subway tile is a classic and will never go out of stile.. but I also LOVE the small marble mosaic (subway like) tile that comes on a sheet. Good luck to you, but you have such great taste that I am sure whatever your final decision is it will be BEAUTIFUL - Susan
First of all - I will hunt you down and visit your fabulous new NC home so watch out (you may want to up your security system)!
Love white subway - I have it in my shower (beveled) and in my other two bathrooms. Maybe you could go with beveled subway - but then that would probably price it around the same as marble.
I found my tile on Ebay - it was way cheaper then I found around here.
Or you could do penny tile again (I have it on my girls bathroom floor and in part of their shower).
There - I have been absolutely no help whatsoever - but can't wait to see what you decide!!
Kelly
I am loving the ideas. I am sure it will turn out great.

Just remember that marble stains and is time consuming to care for, so if you cook a lot don't use it for a back splash around your stove. :) I love all those kitchens, but I dream of a vintage look...
Conifers! Aghghghgh... (:
