scary mary

see?  i don't lie.

scary.

super-duper scary, right?  for 20 bucks, though, i didn't balk at her bruises nor blink at her burns.

okay, but that blink could've been allergies.

when the craigslist poster introduced me to mary she was perched cockeyed and upside down atop a crashed camaro sitting in the garage.

yep, the chick hoarded broken stuff.  not that there's anything wrong with that.

i sanded and filled....and fleck by fleck, bit by bit mary split, snapped and splintered.  poor, poor mary.  she was tired and hungry for the rejuvenation of color... of a new skin... and i kept badgering her with my sandpaper trying to smooth away her past.

at every edge, mary reminded me that her history was stayin' put.

i stopped and listened.  after a blush of embarrassment and a shake of the head, i reached for annie sloan's can o' rejuvenation and acceptance.

okay, that was a touch dramatic but it's my blog and mary and i feel dramatic today.

mary was in no mood for dilution so we went whole-flippin'-hog with barcelona beauty.

some of her checkered past persistently puckered through her new skin so glue and straps were called to action.

... and so was some rub 'n buff bling.

i love, love this rub 'n buff stuff and want to rub 'n buff all that is rub 'n buffable... especially after seeing this last week:

trust me on this.... sammy at renew redo rocks the rub 'n buff like no other.  really.  you will not believe the before shot of these chairs.  yes, go over there now... i'll wait.

SEE? did i tell you she's amazing????

so, uh.... my bling is not lookin' so blingy after seeing sammy's BLING, is it?

still, i did rock it with my kuh-nob choice, didn't i?

oh, yeah, another steal from anthropologie.  of course, a few of you would rather see a tame version of mary with some clear glass or perhaps a brass hardware but mary was begging for brightness so i caved.

duff's drawn to the boldness.  why else would he horn in on the photo shoot?

yes, mary still shares her history with a few ripples in her fresh skin.

but we all have a few ripples, don't we?

now, for the succinct version of this post...

i recently found the collage button in picasa.  cool, huh?

some people like the bigger "before & after" shots so here they are, too.

so, that's mary who used to be scary.

not so scary now, is she?

This is crazy cool! I am still waiting for my Barcelona but I've been trackin' the UPS man and it is almost here. Can't wait. Not sure what I can do to top that though. I love the knobs. The piece I debuted today has a little Anthropologie as well but it seems so subdued compared to Mary. Mary has it goin' on.

I just love scary mary. I usually dislike orange but I love this piece. She is so bright and fresh. I would never have attempted to work with a piece with so much veneer damage but now I just might. Thanks for the inspiration.

Mary is lookin pretty damn HOT these days...and you rocked it with those knobs! I think the rub-n-buff is just right, not too flashy. (I want some!!)
If I could only look so good after a bit of sanding, filling, gluing and paint...*sigh*

Scary Mary not so contrary... She's a beaut! I dutifully followed all your instructions and thus thoroughly enjoyed your blog post and Rub-n-buff Sammy... Seriously genius. I'm googling where to get some of that stuff. And I, for one, and TIRED of all the white and grey furniture we are all painting these days. Mary does the world some colourful GOOD with her orange makeover... I am partial to orange as it is the colour of my hair...

This is an amazing transformation! But...I have to tell you that I was kind of freaked out when I scrolled down and saw that vintage, pleather office chair. My mother actually has/had a chair like this and I woke up this morning thinking about it, wondering if she still had it and what I could do with it. Freaky huh?

Gorgeous! What a fun piece! Would love to have you come over and link it up to my first party! The party runs one more day and then Thursdays after that!
