the red zone

perhaps you noticed that the valentine projects are popping up (not pointing any fingers...um... cassie.) and red is in the air.

i'm more of a "join 'em" than "beat 'em" blogger so i'm killing the valentine and furniture birds with one bold, red stone.  not quite the perfect valentine "craft" but i'm still beat from that last holiday.

anyhowdeedoo, this maple man was quietly cornered at an almost-over-garage sale when i grabbed it for THIRTY BUCKS!  solid, smoothly sliding drawers and not a scent of stink could be sniffled.

THIRTY BUCKS is kinda worth screaming about, right?  RIGHT?

once home,  i delved into its dark places and discovered 'dat all is not delightful in 'da land o' thirty dollar dressers.

out came the glue, the clamps, the straps....and back down went the veneer.

i do use a teeny tool to gently pry up the top so i can glop the glue deep down yonder where the sun don't shine.

it's hard to see but i slide a long but flat board under the strap and clamp to add even pressure over the glued area.

i wrapped up the messy stuff and delightfully danced out with my hot-number-hiding-in-a-can....ASCP in emperor's silk!

via classic wall finishes

(by the way, newbies to annie sloan chalk paint, patty at classic wall finishes is the ascp goddess of stockests.  TRUST ME.  she's one of those chicks that's done it all in the world o' paint and goes the extra mile to make sure you have a smooth ride on the chalk paint express.)

okay, 'nuf bidness....let's talk about red 'cuz you may recall my desire to pump up the flatness in the furniture world...to add blitz to the blah.... to de-bland the boring.

bring on the red!

red may be resolute and vivid and heroic but, to some, it bellows blistering and torrid and feverish.  for my first foray into the red zone i decided to add some contrast with paris gray. sometimes bright colors on a large piece cloak the detail under the commanding chromaticity.  that is a chance i wasn't takin'.

i used a tiny brush to add paris gray to the details by hand b/c i was not looking for perfection.  plus, chalk paint is easily controlled by gently zipping over with 200 grit sandpaper so no worries, dudes.

the drawers looks foggy b/c this shot was post-sand and pre-wax, a rather awkward time.

hey,  maple man...welcome to the red zone....

what was that you said?  yes, i can hear your muttering out there.   don't tell me.  i know, i know....it's about the darker mottled areas, isn't it?

don't tell me you expect perfection?  c'mon, peeps.  it's A R T.  yeah, well there's a thing called furniture art... which, by the way, falls in the category of "things in life that are not expected to be perfect or flawless and are totally subjective"....in case you didn't know that.

i've also learned that chalk paint covers very differently than latex paint.  it has that ARTistic quality to the finish that has texture and depth ... so if you are looking for perfection in your paint finish make sure your eyes are wide open when trying ascp the first time.

here are some close ups of the distressed paris gray details and hardware.

within minutes of securing the hardware, one of my son's walked in and dubbed it his new dresser.

now that is my kind of subjective.   is it yours?

Love the red dresser.. I'm not a big red furniture fan, although I have painted a small oak chest with the same ASCP red and loved it, but this came out GREAT! I also get my paint from Patti at Classic and she is so SUPER nice & helpful... Love your blog, you are VERY funny...

This is really beautiful, I love the color! I think displaying it in front of that turquoise door makes it look like a magazine pic. I can't believe you got that for $30, now I feel bad for making some poor woman buy a really really stinky buffet from me for $40. It came out of Shorty's nasty house and I didn't want to touch it...I should have just given it to her for free. I feel like a bad person now.

Thanks for supporting me on my latest nightmare (journey to awesomeness) whatever.

I didn't think I was no reply! How do I fix that? I don't see a setting...my email address is checked to be displayed...I'm confused. :/

I love this! You did such a great job. I am actually in the process of working on something very similar but using white instead of the grey. I've been going back and forth on hardware colors and really love what you have chosen for yours! Is that a brushed nickle that you used? So beautiful! I hope my project turns out as pretty as yours!

I saw this gorgeous dresser on Miss Mustard Seed. Love the red! I am loving your style (design style and blog style). I am your newest follower. Thanks for the heads up on the chalk paint. I haven't jumped on that bandwagon yet but I have a project in mind, so it's good to know the texture and application is different from regular paint (I probably would be wondering what I did wrong if I hadn't read your post). ;)

Furniture like this is what got me to try Annie Sloan chalk paint. I love your dresser. OMG. I have a little side dresser I've been saving forever for the right inspiration. Maybe this color? I'm an artist and am slowly working on my own home. Oh, so slowly, our house is getting there.

Adding you to my links blog now. :-)
